Given below are the equivalent ranks of the commissioned officers of the three services. The topmost column is the highest rank and they decrease down the column.





Significance of 5-star ranks

  • The top ranks of the three Indian Defence forces Field Marshal (in Army), Marshal of the Air Force (in Air Force), and Admiral of the Fleet (in Navy) are 5 star ranks.

  • The Field Marshal rank has been awarded to General Sam Manekshaw (1973) and General Cariappa (1986) till date.

  • Air Chief Marshal Arjan Singh received the rank of the Marshal of the Indian Air Force (2001).

  • The Admiral of the Fleet rank has never been awarded

  • Indian military officers who hold a 5 star rank are considered to be serving officers till death and hold their rank for life.

dear 1st chart showing ranks of the forces have a minor mistake i.e heading of THE Indian navy and Indian airforce is miss allocated, please rectify it as soon as you see this. ty
