A BRIEF HISTORY-
The development of this missile was started by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) in the '90s, under the Advanced Experimental Torpedo program. It is based on the Italian A-244s advanced light torpedo.
SPECIFICATIONS
The Shyena is electrically propelled and can attain a speed of 33 knots (62 km/hr) in both, shallow and deep water and it can sustain its speed for a duration of 6 minutes.
It can operate at a depth of a few hundred meters and can home in on targets by active/passive homing. Once launched, it can perform pre-programmable search patterns for available targets.
The torpedo weighs around 220 kilograms.
PRODUCTION
In 1994, Shyena was ready for trials was tested 24 times by the NSTL from 1998-2000.
95% of the components are indigenous except for a few integrated circuits and sensors. The Shyena is currently being manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited.
